Features
Hindko is an Indo-Aryan language spoken primarily in northern Pakistan, particularly in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces. It shares many features with neighboring languages like Punjabi and Saraiki, including a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order, postpositions (rather than prepositions), and gendered nouns. Hindko is known for its rich system of honorifics, reflecting social hierarchies and politeness. The language employs retroflex consonants typical of South Asian languages and exhibits considerable variation in pronunciation and vocabulary across its dialects. Hindko is traditionally written in the Shahmukhi script, a variant of the Persian-Arabic script also used for Urdu.
Dialects
Hindko comprises a group of closely related dialects rather than a single standardized language, and its varieties can differ notably in pronunciation, vocabulary, and intonation. The two major dialect groupings are Northern Hindko, spoken primarily in the Hazara region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (especially in Abbottabad and Mansehra), and Southern Hindko, found in areas like Kohat and Attock. Northern Hindko, sometimes referred to as "Hazara Hindko," is the most widely spoken and serves as a de facto standard for media and cultural preservation efforts. The dialects often blend into neighboring languages such as Pashto, Punjabi, and Saraiki, reflecting the region’s linguistic diversity and ongoing language contact.
Writing System
U.S. Distribution
Hindko is spoken in the United States by members of the Pakistani and Pashtun American communities, particularly those who have emigrated from regions like Hazara, Kohat, and Pothohar. It is most commonly found in areas with significant South Asian populations, including New York City, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, as well as parts of New Jersey and Texas. Although the overall number of speakers is relatively small, Hindko is often maintained within households and cultural gatherings among first-generation immigrants. Among younger generations, however, English and Urdu tend to be more dominant in daily use.
