Features
Jarai is an Austronesian language spoken in Vietnam’s Central Highlands and parts of Cambodia. Linguistically, it is analytic, with little inflection, and depends on word order (typically subject–verb–object) and particles to indicate grammatical relationships. Its phonology favors open syllables (CV patterns) and uses vowel length, diphthongs, and tone-like pitch differences for contrast. Reduplication is a central morphological process, marking plurality, intensity, or aspect. The pronoun system encodes distinctions of number and social hierarchy, reflecting the importance of status in Jarai culture. Lexicon and syntax favor monosyllabic and disyllabic roots, with compounding frequently employed to form new words.
Dialects
Jarai is generally divided into two main dialect groups: the Vietnamese Jarai dialects, spoken primarily in Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces, and the Cambodian Jarai dialects, spoken across the border in Ratanakiri Province. While mutually intelligible, these varieties differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and loanword influence—Vietnamese Jarai shows heavier borrowing from Vietnamese, while Cambodian Jarai incorporates more Khmer elements. Within Vietnam, smaller local variations exist (such as in Pleiku versus Cheo Reo areas), but overall dialect differences are relatively minor, allowing Jarai speakers from different regions to communicate without difficulty.
Writing System
Latin script (Vietnamese alphabet)
U.S. Distribution
The U.S. is home to only a few hundred Jarai speakers, most of whom are refugees or descendants of refugees who arrived after the Vietnam War. While exact numbers are not tracked in national surveys, community information suggests that North Carolina has been a central location for Jarai resettlement. Smaller groups are likely spread across other states, but the overall U.S. Jarai-speaking population remains relatively small and localized.
