Features

Gujarati has three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and
follows a Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) sentence structure. It features
a rich system of verb conjugations based on tense, aspect, and
politeness levels. The language has been influenced by Sanskrit,
Persian, Arabic, and English, leading to a diverse vocabulary.

Dialects

Gujarati has several dialects, broadly categorized into Standard
Gujarati, Saurashtra, Kathiawari, Surati, and Gamadia, among
others. These dialects vary in pronunciation, vocabulary, and
grammar based on regional and social influences. Surati is known
for its softer pronunciation, while Kathiawari has distinct
intonations. The Gamadia dialect, spoken in central Gujarat, forms
the basis of Standard Gujarati. Additionally, there are overseas
variations influenced by migration, such as East African and UK
Gujarati, which incorporate loanwords from local languages.
Despite these differences, Gujarati speakers generally understand
each other across dialects.

Devanagari script

U.S. Distribution

Gujarati is widely spoken among Indian-American communities in
the United States, particularly in states with large South Asian
populations. The highest concentrations of Gujarati speakers are
found in New Jersey, California, Texas, Illinois, and New York,
especially in cities like Edison, Jersey City, San Francisco Bay Area,
Houston, and Chicago. Gujarati is one of the most spoken Indian
languages in the U.S., driven by significant immigration from
Gujarat since the mid-20th century.
