Features
It is a tonal language that uses pitch differences to distinguish both word meaning and grammatical relationships. Nuer has a rich system of vowel length and quality contrasts, as well as extensive morphological marking on nouns and verbs, including number, possession, and tense/aspect. Verbs play a central grammatical role, often carrying complex information about subject, tense, and voice. Syntax is typically Subject–Verb–Object (SVO), and meaning is powerfully shaped by tone, vowel alternation, and affixation rather than by word order alone.
Dialects
The Nuer language is relatively dialectally unified compared to many African languages. Still, it does have several regional dialects corresponding to major Nuer communities and geographic areas in South Sudan and western Ethiopia. The primary divisions include Western Nuer, Eastern Nuer, and Central Nuer, with subvarieties often named after major clans or river regions (e.g., Lou, Jikany, and Bul). These dialects are largely mutually intelligible, differing primarily in pronunciation, tone patterns, and some vocabulary, rather than in core grammar. Despite these variations, speakers across regions generally communicate without significant difficulty.

U.S. Distribution
In the U.S., Nuer is spoken primarily within refugee and immigrant communities from South Sudan and Ethiopia, with the largest concentrations found in the Upper Midwest, especially Minnesota (notably the Minneapolis-St. Paul area), which hosts one of the largest South Sudanese populations in the country. Additional Nuer-speaking communities are found in Nebraska (Omaha and Lincoln), Iowa, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and Tennessee, often clustered around secondary resettlement cities. Smaller but established populations also exist in parts of the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast. These communities maintain active cultural, religious, and mutual-aid networks where Nuer remains in regular use, especially among first-generation immigrants.
