Features

Azeri (Azerbaijani) is characterized by vowel harmony, agglutinative morphology, and subject-object-verb (SOV) word order. It uses suffixes to express grammatical relationships, such as tense, case, possession, and plurality. It has six grammatical cases and lacks grammatical gender. Pronunciation is generally straightforward, with a regular phonetic system and a rich set of vowel and consonant sounds. Vocabulary is primarily Turkic but includes many loanwords from Persian, Arabic, and Russian due to historical influences.

Dialects

Azeri (Azerbaijani) has two main dialect groups: North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani. North Azerbaijani is the official language of Azerbaijan and is spoken primarily in the Republic of Azerbaijan, while South Azerbaijani is spoken mainly in northwestern Iran. Though mutually intelligible, the dialects differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and some grammatical structures due to historical and political separation. Additional regional subdialects exist within each group, influenced by local languages and ethnic communities.

Writing System

Latin script (Azerbaijan), Cyrillic script (Russia), Perso-Arabic script (Iran)
