Features
A symbolic fusional (synthetic) language with a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order. A highly complex verb system wherein verbs are modified through the addition of vowels and suffixes and are marked for person, gender, and number. There are ten (10) classes of verbs. Nouns and adjectives are also marked.
Dialects
Gondar, Gojjami, and Showa, all of which are mutually intelligible. The standard form of the language is based on the dialect spoken in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Ge’ez script.

Approximately 330,000 individuals of Ethiopian ancestry living in the United States, including native-born Ethiopians. Difficult to determine the number of Amharic speakers versus other Ethiopian languages, such as Oromo and Tigrinya. The largest community of Ethiopian-Americans is found in the Washington, DC Metro Region. Other large communities are located in New York and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
