Indo-European, Armenian
Includes many unique linguistic features shaped by centuries of contact with neighboring cultures. It has a rich consonant system, including aspirated and ejective sounds, and follows a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order. Highly inflected, using seven noun cases and complex verb conjugations to express tense, mood, person, and number. Lacks grammatical gender and often uses postpositions instead of prepositions. Vocabulary is primarily Indo-European but includes many loanwords from Persian, Greek, Turkish, and Russian.
Armenian has two primary standardized dialects: Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian. Eastern Armenian is spoken primarily in Armenia, Iran, and parts of the Caucasus, while Western Armenian is used mainly by the Armenian diaspora, particularly in the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas. The two dialects differ in pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary, though they share the same alphabet and have a common literary tradition. While generally mutually intelligible, speakers may notice significant differences in verb forms, phonetics, and usage.

In the United States, Armenian is primarily spoken in communities with large Armenian-American populations. The highest concentrations are found in California, particularly in Los Angeles County and cities like Glendale, which has one of the largest Armenian-speaking populations outside of Armenia. Other notable communities exist in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and parts of the Midwest. The U.S. Armenian population includes both Eastern and Western Armenian speakers, often reflecting the immigration patterns of Armenians from the Middle East, the former Soviet Union, and Armenia itself.
