Features
A Romance language spoken primarily in the autonomous region of Galicia in northwestern Spain. It evolved from Latin, like Spanish and Portuguese, and shares many features with both, particularly Portuguese, to which it is historically and structurally closest. Galician has a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order, a rich system of verb conjugations that express tense, aspect, mood, and person, and uses gendered nouns (masculine and feminine) with definite and indefinite articles. It is a syllable-timed language with relatively consistent phonetic spelling. Galician also features nasal vowels and diphthongs, especially in rural dialects, and exhibits lexical and phonological variation influenced by both Spanish and Portuguese due to centuries of linguistic contact.
Dialects
Galician exhibits several regional dialects that vary primarily in pronunciation, vocabulary, and some grammatical forms. These dialects are generally grouped into three main zones: Western, Central, and Eastern. The Western dialects, spoken along the coast, tend to preserve older phonetic features and exhibit more influence from Portuguese. Central dialects, found around cities like Santiago de Compostela, are considered the most "standard" and form the basis for much of the written language. Eastern dialects, spoken closer to the border with León and Asturias, show greater influence from Spanish and feature distinct vowel and consonant shifts. Despite these differences, all Galician dialects remain mutually intelligible, and efforts toward linguistic normalization have promoted a standardized form used in education and media.

U.S. Distribution
In the United States, Galician is spoken by a small but culturally active population of immigrants from the Galicia region of northwestern Spain. While not widely spoken nationwide, Galician can be found in communities with historical ties to Spanish and Portuguese immigration, particularly in parts of New York, New Jersey, Florida, and California. Within these communities, the language is often maintained by older generations and used in cultural associations, traditional festivals, and Galician heritage events. However, English and Spanish tend to dominate daily life, and intergenerational transmission of Galician is limited, making heritage preservation efforts important for maintaining the language among descendants.
