Features

Although also classified as an Indo-European language, Greek has little in common with the languages of its geographic neighbors. Greek follows either a “Subject-Verb-Object” (SVO) or “Verb-Subject-Object” (VSO) word order. Greek verbs include synthetic inflections for person, number, tense, aspect, mood, and voice. Greek pronouns have distinctions for person, number, and gender. Nouns, articles, and adjectives show all distinctions except for person. Both attributive and predicative adjectives agree with the noun. Most of Modern Greek vocabulary is derived from Ancient Greek, although there are a number of loanwords from Latin, Venetian, Turkish, English, and several other languages.

Dialects

Modern Standard Greek is, by far, the most widely spoken version of Greek and the national language. Among other, small dialects, there is little variation. A few outlying, isolated regions to show some significant variations.

U.S. Distribution

It is estimated that there are between 1.2 and 3 million Greek-Americans in the U.S. As of 2010, approximately 300,000 speak the Greek language. The highest contrast of Greek-Americans can be found in New York City, Boston, and Chicago. There are also numerous other small and medium-sized Greek communities throughout the country. With the long history of Greek immigration to the United States, and close relations with the countries, Greek culture (especially cuisine) and traditions have become widely known throughout the country and are enjoyed and share between Greeks and many non-Greeks.
