Features
The Moldovan language is linguistically identical to Romanian, sharing the same grammar, phonology, core vocabulary, and literary standard. What is often referred to as “Moldovan” is essentially the Moldavian regional variety of Romanian—characterized by a few regional lexical items and some softer phonetic tendencies, but nothing that constitutes a separate language. Since there is no structural linguistic difference between the two, the Republic of Moldova recognizes Romanian as its official language, and modern legislation, education, and media all adhere to the standard Romanian norm. Politically, some people still use the term “Moldovan,” but from a linguistic perspective, it is the same language as Romanian.
Dialects
Because Moldovan is not a separate language from Romanian, its “dialects” are in fact the regional varieties of the Moldavian branch of Romanian. These varieties are spoken across northeastern Romania and most of the Republic of Moldova. The Moldavian dialect is characterized by features such as palatalized consonants, certain vowel shifts, and a set of regional lexical items (for example, older Slavic-influenced words or rural vocabulary). Within Moldova, speech varies slightly by region—north, central, and southern areas—but these are micro-regional accents, not distinct dialects in the strict linguistic sense. All remain fully intelligible with standard Romanian, reinforcing the fact that Moldovan is simply a regional variety of the Romanian language.

U.S. Distribution
In the U.S., “Moldovan” speakers are counted together with Romanian speakers, since the U.S. Census does not distinguish between the two. Most immigrants from the Republic of Moldova report speaking Romanian at home, reflecting the linguistic reality that Moldovan is simply the Moldavian regional variety of Romanian. Moldovan-origin communities are primarily located in New York City (especially Brooklyn and Queens), the Chicago metropolitan area, California (notably Sacramento and Los Angeles), as well as parts of Florida and Washington State. These communities typically maintain Romanian-language media, churches, and cultural associations, and many younger immigrants shift between Romanian/Moldovan at home and English in public settings.
