Features

Pulaar is characterized by a rich, systematic grammar that relies heavily on noun-class agreement, in which nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and verbs are marked to indicate class and number relationships. Verbal morphology is detailed, expressing tense, aspect, mood, and polarity through affixes and particles, while word order is relatively flexible due to this extensive grammatical marking. Pulaar also makes broad use of pragmatic particles to convey emphasis, focus, and speaker attitude, allowing nuanced meaning beyond basic sentence structure. Overall, meaning in Pulaar is often carried through grammatical relationships and inflection rather than fixed word order.

Dialects

Pulaar encompasses a range of closely related regional varieties spoken across West Africa, often associated with historic Futa regions and Fulɓe communities. While these varieties—commonly labeled Pulaar, Pular, or Fulfulde depending on location—show differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, and particular grammatical preferences, they remain largely mutually intelligible. Variation tends to reflect geography and contact with neighboring languages rather than deep structural divergence, and speakers generally recognize one another as using forms of the same language despite local distinctions.

Writing System

Latin script, Ajami script (an older Arabic script), Adlam script

U.S. Distribution

In the U.S., Pulaar is spoken primarily among West African immigrant communities, particularly those from Senegal, Guinea, Mali, and Mauritania. The largest concentrations are found in major metropolitan areas such as New York City, Atlanta, Washington, DC, Minneapolis–St. Paul, Columbus (Ohio), and parts of Texas and California, where established Fulɓe communities support cultural, religious, and mutual-aid networks. Pulaar is most often used in home, community, and spiritual settings, while English dominates public life. However, there is growing demand for Pulaar-language access in healthcare, social services, education, and immigration-related contexts.
