Features
Punjabi is known for its distinctive sound system, including phonemic tone, meaning pitch can change word meaning. Its grammar is highly inflected, with verbs marking tense, aspect, mood, and agreement, and it exhibits a split-ergative pattern in certain past-tense constructions. Punjabi primarily uses postpositions (rather than prepositions) and allows fairly flexible word order, as grammatical relationships are carried by inflection; auxiliaries and particles add emphasis and aspectual nuance. Most vocabulary comes from Indo-Aryan roots, with major borrowing from Persian and Arabic (more prominent in Pakistani Punjabi) and additional influence from Sanskrit/Hindi and English (more prominent in Indian Punjabi). The two national varieties are mutually intelligible, with the main differences showing up in vocabulary, register, and stylistic preference rather than core grammar.
Dialects
Punjabi encompasses a broad range of regional dialects spoken across Pakistan and India, commonly grouped into Western (Pakistani) and Eastern (Indian) Punjabi varieties. Major dialects include Majhi (often considered the prestige or standard variety), Doabi, Malwai, and Pwadhi in India, and Pothohari, Jhangochi, Shahpuri, and Hindko-adjacent varieties in Pakistan. These dialects differ mainly in pronunciation, vocabulary, and certain grammatical preferences, while remaining largely mutually intelligible, especially in everyday communication; Standard Punjabi used in education and media is based mainly on Majhi.
Writing System
Gurmukhī script (India), Shāhmukhī script (Pakistan, based on the Perso-Arabic alphabet)
U.S. Distribution
In the U.S., Punjabi is widely spoken among South Asian immigrant communities, particularly those from India and Pakistan. The largest concentrations of Punjabi speakers are found in California (especially the Central Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area), New York–New Jersey, Texas, Washington State, and Illinois, with growing communities in Virginia and Georgia. Punjabi is commonly used in homes, religious institutions such as gurdwaras and mosques, community organizations, and ethnic media, while English dominates public life. Demand for Punjabi-language access is robust across healthcare, education, legal services, and community outreach.
