Features

A Romance language distinguished by its preservation of several Latin grammatical features that have been lost in most other Romance languages, alongside significant influence from Slavic, Greek, Turkish, and Hungarian. It retains a case system (notably nominative/accusative and genitive/dative), uses postposed definite articles attached to nouns, and features a rich system of verb conjugations marking tense, mood, and aspect. Romanian phonology includes both Romance and Balkan features, and the language participates in the Balkan Sprachbund, sharing structural traits such as analytic constructions and reduced infinitive usage with neighboring non-Romance languages.

Dialects

Romanian consists of several major dialect groups that form a continuum rather than sharply divided varieties. The primary dialect is Daco-Romanian, spoken in Romania and Moldova, with regional subdialects such as Wallachian, Moldavian, Banat, and Transylvanian, all of which are essentially mutually intelligible and form the basis of the standard language. Beyond this, three closely related but distinct Eastern Romance varieties—Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian, and Istro-Romanian—are spoken in parts of the Balkans and Croatia; they differ substantially in phonology and vocabulary and are only partially intelligible, or not mutually intelligible, with standard Romanian.

U.S. Distribution

In the U.S., Romanian is spoken primarily within immigrant and diaspora communities from Romania and Moldova, with significant concentrations in New York City and New Jersey, the Chicago metropolitan area, Detroit and southeastern Michigan, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. Romanian-language use is strongest in community, religious, and cultural settings, particularly within Romanian Orthodox churches and community organizations. Demand for Romanian in the U.S. is most visible in healthcare, legal, immigration, and social services, where limited English proficiency among older immigrants and recent arrivals creates ongoing language access needs.
