Features
Russian is a fusional (inflected) language, with words being modified to express tense, case, voice, aspect, person, number, gender, and mood. There are three tenses (past, present, and future), with each verb having two aspects (perfective and imperfective). There are six cases, including nominative, accusative, dative, genitive, instrumental, and prepositional. It utilizes a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order, but with significant flexibility.
Dialects
“Standard Russian” is based on the Moscow dialect. As a result of compulsory education and mass media efforts during Soviet times, only minimal dialectal differences remain between Northern and Southern variants and the Russian language is largely homogenous.
Writing System
Cyrillic alphabet
