Features
Spoken primarily in Sri Lanka, Sinhala (Sinhalese) is notable for its unique phonological system, rich morphology, and long literary history. It features a distinctive set of prenasalized consonants and a contrast between short and long vowels, which are phonemically meaningful. Sinhala grammar relies heavily on suffixation to mark case, tense, and mood, and it exhibits diglossia, with a clear distinction between a formal literary variety and a colloquial spoken form. The language uses its own abugida script, derived from Brahmi, in which consonants carry inherent vowels that are modified by diacritics.
Dialects
Sinhala has several regional dialects that are generally mutually intelligible but differ in pronunciation, vocabulary, and some grammatical features. The main division is between Low Country Sinhala, spoken in coastal and urban areas, and Kandyan (Up-Country) Sinhala, associated with the central highlands, which is often regarded as more conservative in pronunciation. Additional regional varieties are found in areas such as Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North Central Sri Lanka, each showing localized lexical and phonetic traits. Alongside these regional dialects, Sinhala also maintains a strong diglossia between spoken Sinhala and the formal written/literary standard used in education, the media, and official contexts.

U.S. Distribution
In the U.S., Sinhala (Sinhalese) is spoken primarily within Sri Lankan American communities, concentrated in major metropolitan areas. The largest populations are found in New Jersey, New York, California, Texas, and Virginia, particularly around cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, San Jose, Dallas, and Northern Virginia. Sinhala is most commonly used in home, community, and cultural or religious settings, while English dominates in public and professional life.
