Turkish features vowel harmony and agglutination, in which complex words are created by stringing together morphemes without changing their spelling or phonetics. The basic word order is subject-object-verb (SOV), with no grammatical gender or noun classes. Turkish includes T-V distinction (levels of “polite speech”) based on relation to the speaker, social class, age, etc. There are nine simple and 20 compound verb tenses in Turkish. Vocabulary is comprised of 86% of words of Turkish origin, with loanwords from Arabic, Persian, French, Italian, Greek, and English.
Modern Standard Turkish is based on the Istanbul dialect.

Roughly 500,000 Turks living in the United States (2010 U.S. Census), which also includes Turkish immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Balkans, and Cyprus.
