Features
Urdu is a highly inflected language with a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order, although there are few fixed rules and a high degree of flexibility and variation. Urdu words are inflected to express gender, number, person, and case by adding a suffix or changing the sound of the word endings. Verbs are structured according to aspect and tense/mood, with successive layers of inflectional elements following the lexical base.
Dialects
Urdu is one of the standardized registers of the Hindustani language, with the other main standardized register being Hindi, and the two registers exhibit an extremely high degree of mutual intelligibility.
Writing System
Modified Perso-Arabic script
U.S. Distribution
There are approximately 300,000 speakers of Urdu in the United States and roughly 500,000 Pakistani-Americans, although many speak languages other than Urdu, such as Punjabi, Pashto, and Sindhi. The largest communities of Pakistani-Americans can be found in the New York Metropolitan Area; Washington, DC; Chicago; San Francisco; and New Jersey.
