Features
An analytic language that makes use of grammatical particles to indicate the relationship between words in a sentence. Follows a subject-verb-object (SVO) word order which can be modified to topic-prominent. A tonal language, like Chinese, and consisting of 5-6 tones, depending on the regional dialect. Also uses a complex system of noun classifiers and measure words.
Dialects
Five major regional dialects: Northern, North-Central, Mid-Central, South-Central, and Southern varieties. Each dialect group is largely mutually intelligible, with some differences in pronunciation (sound systems), vocabulary, and grammar.
Writing System
Modified Latin script, including additional digraphs and accent marks used to indicate tone.
U.S. Distribution
Approximately 1.5 million speakers of Vietnamese, making it the fifth most widely spoken language in the United States. The largest concentrations of Vietnamese are found in California, Texas, Virginia, and Florida. Most Vietnamese communities in the United States were established by resettled refugees following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
